Last Friday (March 7, 2025), Sarasota County History Center staff and members of the Sarasota County Historical Commission unveiled a new historical marker describing the founding of Gillespie Park, as well as the story of its namesake, John Hamilton Gillespie, Sarasota’s first mayor and an important figure in the story of the town’s establishment in the 1880s. The new historical marker, which was sponsored by the Gillespie Park Neighborhood Association, is located on the west side of Gillespie Park at the corner of North Osprey Avenue and 8th Street in Sarasota.
